McCain=Maverick?  Not Likely

3 november 2008 — Like every American, I am weary from this campaign.  You may think I am tired of the non-stop TV ads or the domination of our very lives.  No, what I’m most sick of is the misinformation that McCain-Palin spews out.  It is very hard to choose what misinformation to write about, but I will try.

Let’s take the “maverick” label they have hung on themselves.  McCain is no “maverick.”  By definition, it means “a person who refuses to conform to a particular party or group.”  Excuse me?  Was John McCain trying on his maverick hat when he chose a running mate that was a clear pander to the conservative, anti-choice base in the Republican Party?  Was he practicing his maverickness when he voted with President Bush over 90 percent of the time?  What about when he declared the American economy “sound”—was his maverick philosophy coming through?  No, I think “out of touch” replaced his “maverickness” a long time ago.

We’ve been told there are many voters still undecided and a few states that have turned to “swing” states, meaning they’re up for grabs.  One of the swing states is Virginia, which is right here next to the District of Columbia.  I joined over 500 volunteers this past weekend to go door-to-door, talk to voters, and see where they stood.  After encountering only one McCain supporter out of three dozen, I felt good that no one was buying what the “maverick” was selling.
